In 2025, the project A Slovenian New Year Decoration in Our Home proves once again that cultural ties know no borders. For several years, this project has been uniting Slovenian children at home and around the world with kindness and creativity, building bridges between communities in different continents during the time when days are getting shorter, evenings glow in festive lights and children's expectations fill homes with warmth.
The project initiated by Nina Nemec is based on the international exchange of New Year decorations created by children of various nations. Each decoration tells a story of a child's dreams, imagination and delight in creating.
These decorations are not only festive ornaments on Christmas trees, they also carry a strong message about creativity, symbolism and the sense of belonging.
By shaping paper, wood or dried flowers small hands create decorations full of warmth, pride and the feeling of home, wherever in the world the child lives. The project also strengthens patriotic awareness and confidence. In 2025, a special focus is on symbolically connecting Slovenian children, those in Slovenia and those living beyond its borders.
International co-operation and sustainability values
This year, around 10 countries have joined the project, which shows how strong are the ties between the participating communities and confirms the long-term value of the project. Each participating community gives the project its own festive mark, but the common message is the same: unity, warmth and shared festive moments.
The support of the Slovenian national brand I feel Slovenia plays an important role in increasing the projects visibility and spreading its message around the world.
The project also places great emphasis on sustainability. All decorations are made from sustainable and natural materials, such as paper, wood and dried flowers, which symbolically link children's creativity with nature and respect for the environment. When children use plastic, they recycle it. Plastic cups are turned into bells whose gentle sound and festive look convey a message of responsibility towards future generations.
Decorations as cultural ambassadors of Slovenia
In 2025, the Slovenian New Year decorations will be hung on Christmas trees at many Slovenian embassies and representations around the world, including Dublin, Budapest, Berlin, Washington, Bern, London, Dubai, Madrid and Novi Sad. Every decorated Christmas tree becomes a symbol of home. A small but strong reminder of Slovenian culture, children's creativity and common values. In past years, such decoration have already adorned the embassies in Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
They attracted a lot of attention in the United States of America, where they were exhibited in the largest library of the Washington University, as well as in London and Paris, where they helped create warmth and a sense of connection during the holidays.
The project's initiator associates the idea with her many years of work in children's literature and international cooperation.
Through workshops, book projects and cooperation with Slovenian schools, societies and diplomatic missions, the project proves year after year that a simple but symbolically strong idea can turn into something extraordinary during the festive season.
In 2025, A Slovenian New Year Decoration in Our Home is a proof that children's creativity and playfulness, and holiday warmth build cultural ties and maintain the connection with homeland even from far away.
