Jurjevanje in Bela Krajina, the oldest folklore festival in Slovenia, is deeply rooted in the rich folk traditions of Bela Krajina and other parts of the country. Step into a land known for its white birch trees, the green Kolpa River, and a vibrant cultural heritage. The 61st Jurjevanje in Bela Krajina will be held from June 18 to June 22 in Črnomelj.
The origins of Jurjevanje trace back to 1933, and more precisely to 1939, when the "Festival of Folk Songs and Dances" was first organized in Črnomelj.
This event laid the foundation for the festival we know today. It became a major celebration of Bela Krajina, blending dance, rituals, and games, and attracting visitors from all across Slovenia.
The first official Jurjevanje, as it is celebrated today, was organized in 1964. Initially focused on showcasing folk dances from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the festival has gradually evolved into a modern event that bridges local and international traditions, past and present.
Throughout history, Jurjevanje has been preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Bela krajina dances, songs and music.
Each year, numerous folklore groups participate in Jurjevanje, presenting the colorful diversity of folk heritage from Slovenia and around the world.
By hosting performers from across the globe, the festival creates a multicultural space of friendship and mutual understanding. In recent years, Jurjevanje has welcomed groups from Colombia, Russia, Mexico, China, India, Belarus, Argentina, Malta, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Serbia, Spain, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Turkey, Poland, Finland, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Peru, the Netherlands, and more.
The festival is alive with vibrant dances, captivating melodies, and ancient customs that offer visitors a truly unique experience.
Highlights include the traditional bonfire celebration, the Green George (Zeleni Jurij) ritual, and performances by folklore groups whose energy and music enrich the festive atmosphere.
Zeleni Jurij (Green George)
The festival was named after an old custom of spring awakening of nature – St George Day celebrations. Green George is an ancient Slavic mythological hero who is a herald of spring, happiness and abundance.
The rituals taking place during jurjevanje highlight regrowth and the beginning of a new life cycle.
The festival celebrates the diversity of cultures and intertwines traditional with modern and local with global. Jurjevanje is also a feast for food lovers.
Festival-goers can savor traditional Belokrajina dishes such as belokranjska pogača (a type of flatbread with salt and caraway seeds), štruklji (rolled dumplings with various fillings), and hearty stews.
Local wineries and brewers present their finest wines and craft beers, allowing visitors to experience the authentic flavors of the region. Special culinary workshops and tastings provide deeper insights into the preparation of traditional dishes and the role of food in local customs.
