Spanning centuries, the Goriška Brda region has developed a unique landscape where history, nature and tradition intertwine. However, it is in spring that the landscape truly comes to life, taking on a distinctive, almost fairy-tale-like appearance.

The first settlements in the area date back to prehistoric times, when people settled on the hills for reasons of safety, visibility, and fertile soil. This pattern of settlement has shaped the appearance of Brda's villages, including Šmartno, Medana, Goče, Dobrovo, and Biljana. Viticulture and fruit farming became the foundation of local life, and despite the trials of history, Brda has managed to preserve its unique identity and traditions.

While history gives Brda its depth, spring gives it its soul. When the hillsides are adorned with shades of white and soft pink as the cherry trees come into bloom, the landscape takes on a magical character.

This blossoming is more than just a natural phenomenon: it symbolises new beginnings and reconnects people to their land year after year. The scent of the flowers, the gentle buzz of the bees, and the soft light over the vineyards create an atmosphere that the locals do not take for granted, but cherish as the fundamental rhythm of their lives.

Preparations also begin at this time for one of the region's most important events: the Cherry Festival.

Cherry Festival honours the entire journey of the fruit from blossom to ripening.

The spring days evoke a sense of anticipation as farmers carefully observe nature, the weather and the development of the fruit, as the success of the harvest depends on it. This season highlights the deep connection between people and nature that remains so evident in Brda.

Spring in Brda

Village footpaths teem with walkers, vineyards burst into life and courtyards buzz with activity as preparations are made for the season ahead. As spring melts into early summer, this delicate beauty gives way to a vibrant social calendar, culminating in the Cherry Festival and, later, the Saint Martin's Day celebrations that bring the year full circle. Yet spring remains that quiet beginning which ties everything together: the moment when life awakens and tradition continues.

Brda is not just a place for producing wine and fruit: it is a living landscape where nature dictates the rhythm of everyday life and celebrations.

Here, spring is more than just a season: it signifies the renewal of life, with every blossom promising fruit, and tradition being woven into daily life. In Goriška Brda, history, tradition and nature do not merely coexist, they breathe together. Nowhere is this more evident than during the cherry blossom season. This is a landscape of transcending beauty, to be felt as well as seen.

Goriška Brda is nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, the emerald Soča River and the Friulian Plain.

This region enjoys a favourable climate and fertile soil, yielding exceptionally high-quality, juicy fruit, including cherries, apricots, peaches, figs, persimmons, apples and pears. In spring, the hillsides are draped in a blanket of orchard blossom, later rewarding local farmers with fragrant and delicious fruit.

Brda Cherries

For centuries, cherries have provided farms in Brda with their first seasonal income, and they remain an important source of livelihood to this day. The residents of Brda honour this cherished fruit with the Brda Cherry Festival, which has been held since 2023, and the fruit even has its own municipal holiday.  Cherished traditions that are still practised on these farms include drying fruit on wooden racks known as piconi, and preparing prunel (sun-dried, hand-peeled plums). These have been part of Brda's culinary heritage for centuries.

Dried fruit, such as plums, apricots, figs, persimmons, and pears, is enjoyed as a snack or used in Brda dishes, particularly in traditional desserts and local specialities.

In 2023, the preparation of prunel and the weaving of piconi were both entered into the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.

Brda cherries are renowned for their juiciness and crispness.

The traditional varieties such as Črne, Bele Cepike, Napoleonke, Čufarce and Tercinke used to be transported far and wide, and were highly prized in European capitals.

The Aromatic Fruits of Brda

Peaches reign supreme in summer, being both aromatic and succulent when harvested at their best. Fig trees offer fruit that is traditionally either dried or sold fresh. Pears, particularly the older varieties, are stored for the winter months, while chestnuts are enjoyed fresh, roasted or boiled in various dishes and are traditionally associated with St Martin's Day celebrations. The Prunel plum, a Brda delicacy, has been dried and prepared according to traditional methods for centuries, and plays an important role in the region's heritage.

Among the grape varieties, the ancient Rebula grape is a standout.

Thriving in the local marl and flysch soils, it produces a golden-yellow wine with fresh, fruity aromas and a harmonious acidity. Rebula is once again returning to vineyards and cellars, reclaiming its place among white wines, and fascinating stories about its origins continue to circulate. The region's favourable microclimate also allows persimmons to be cultivated. Rich in vitamins and minerals, persimmons are enjoyed both fresh and dried. As spring comes to an end, the first succulent apricots appear, packed with vitamins A and C, lending their vibrant flavour to the local cuisine.

Life Written in Stone

Goriška Brda is a place where history, tradition, nature and human craftsmanship come together in perfect harmony. Spring breathes life into the land with the scent of blossom and the promise of a new harvest. Every flower and fruit, and every passing moment, contributes to a cohesive narrative, creating a landscape that can be seen, tasted and truly felt. It is not just the fruit that can be savoured here; wild herbs, such as winter savoury, dandelion, asparagus, and nettles, lend their vibrant character to local salads, soups, and sauces.

The old stone houses and cobbled courtyards of the Brda villages reflect centuries of tradition.

From Šmartno and Medana to Goče and Biljana, and finally to Dobrovo, each village boasts stone dwellings, courtyards, and narrow cobbled streets. Set amidst rolling hills, fertile vineyards, and orchards, they each tell a story. The orchards of cherries, apricots, peaches, figs and lush greenery create a magical mosaic that comes alive each spring, resembling something from a fairy tale. Above all, viticulture and fruit growing are a way of life for the locals, lovingly nurtured for centuries. Every moment is tied to the rhythm of nature, from the time of blossoming to the season of ripening. Thus, Brda reveals itself as a landscape where tradition, sensory richness, and natural beauty unite to create an unforgettable experience.
