59th Jurjevanje celebration in Bela krajina

The region of white birches, the Kolpa River and rich cultural heritage invites visitors to the oldest folklore festival in Slovenia, which will be taking place between 21 and 25 June in Črnomelj.

The festival will feature performances by local and foreign folklore groups. The programme will also include tamburitza and brass bands, music and singing performances, gathering of the Pastirče mlado children’s folklore groups, the “Put the Wheels in Motion” family cycling tour, art exhibitions, crafts fair and a diverse culinary offer.

Throughout history, Jurjevanje has been preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Bela krajina dances, songs and music.

The festival is a multicultural platform for friendship and harmony among various cultures, as it hosts folklore groups and other culture creators from around the world.

Zeleni Jurij (Green George)

The festival was named after an old custom of spring awakening of nature – St George Day celebrations. Green George is an ancient Slavic mythological hero who is a herald of spring, happiness and abundance.

The rituals taking place during jurjevanje highlight regrowth and the beginning of a new life cycle.
