15 April is the day when we can thank all the young volunteers who devote their time to volunteer work, in this way improving our society.
Volunteering is an invaluable experience for young people. It teaches them responsibility towards others and for their work and fosters their personal development. In volunteering they learn about different areas of work and contribute to the development of society. Volunteering is also a mutually beneficial activity. It shapes the one who gives help and the one who receives it. Through their work, volunteers also help the organisation in which they participate.
Young people choose to do volunteer work for various reasons. Some wish to help people in need, defend the interests of those who are at risk or deprived, others want to give back to an organisation from which they received help in the past, raise the quality of life in society, or change the world for the better.
Volunteering in Slovenia
There are 1,863 volunteering organisations and 7,422 volunteers in Slovenia.
Slovene Philanthropy is the central volunteering organisation in Slovenia and the coordinator of the Slovenian Volunteering Organizations Network. It strives to ensure that as many young people as possible get the opportunity to gain volunteering experience, and provides support to volunteering organisations in setting up and implementing volunteering programmes and in recruiting volunteers.
Volunteering work is very diverse. Young people can volunteer in many areas, such as social protection, education, culture, sports, tourism, health, sustainable development, environment, recreation, intergenerational assistance, and protection and rescue.
Global Youth Service Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of volunteer work and encourage young people to spend their free time differently, in a way that enriches, fosters personal development and changes the world for the better.
