Slovenia is a country where exceptional natural beauty meets technological sophistication. Reliable internet infrastructure, a strategic location in the heart of Europe, a safe environment, vibrant cities and a high quality of life create ideal conditions for everyone working remotely. This is why many visitors don't limit themselves to just a few days – they increasingly see Slovenia as a place where they can live and work for extended periods.

From 21 November 2025, Slovenia is opening its doors even further to digital nomads with the introduction of a temporary residence permit for digital nomads, allowing them to live and work in Slovenia for up to one year.

Who is the permit intended for?

A digital nomad is a foreign national who is not a citizen of the European Union or the European Economic Area and is employed by an employer based outside Slovenia or works as a self-employed person abroad, carrying out remote work via communication technology. The key point is that the foreign national must not engaged in the Slovenian labour market.

A temporary residence permit may be issued for up to one year and cannot be extended. A foreign national may apply again six months after the previous permit has expired.

However, if a digital nomad decides they wish to remain in Slovenia for a longer period, they may, during the validity of the permit, apply for another temporary residence permit for an alternative purpose.

Digital nomads must demonstrate that they have sufficient means of subsistence. This amount is set at twice the average annual net salary in Slovenia, which currently equals about EUR 1,600.

A particular advantage of this permit is the more favourable arrangement for family reunification: family members may join the digital nomad immediately, with no time restrictions concerning the foreign national's length of stay in Slovenia or the validity of their permit.
