On 8 March, we honour the strength, determination, and resilience of women everywhere. Their achievements continue to inspire future generations to dream bigger, break barriers, and shape a better world.
In Slovenia, women officially marked International Women’s Day for the first time on March 8, 1911. A significant milestone followed in 1945, when they gained the right to vote. Even earlier, Empress Maria Theresa championed women's education during Slovenia’s time within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, recognizing the power of knowledge.
Trailblazers like Alma M. Karlin, a world traveller and writer, Ivana Kobilca, a renowned painter, and Angela Vode, a pioneering feminist and publicist, paved the way for women in research, creativity, and education. Vode’s book Women in the Present World (1934) remains a cornerstone of Slovenian feminist literature.
Today, Slovenia celebrates women’s achievements through numerous awards in sports, culture, science, and entrepreneurship. More and more women are also receiving state and professional honours, proving that progress is unstoppable.
Happy International Women’s Day! To all the incredible women – your strength, passion, and perseverance inspire us every day.
