Giro d’Italia returns to Slovenia: Stage 14 finishes in Nova Gorica

On 24 May 2025, Slovenia will once again welcome the peloton of the Giro d’Italia, one of the world’s most prestigious road cycling races. The 108th edition of the famed Grand Tours will bring elite riders and cycling fans to the picturesque hills and border towns of western Slovenia in Stage 14.

The 186-kilometre stage starts in Treviso, Italy, and after around 140 kilometres, the riders will cross into Slovenia’s Brda region—a rolling landscape of vineyards, olive groves, and hilltop villages. This wine-making gem offers both a scenic backdrop and a technical challenge for the racers.

After two brief returns to Italian territory, the stage culminates in Nova Gorica, following two laps through the city and its twin across the border, Gorizia (Italy). These two towns are uniquely connected not only by geography but also by culture—and in 2025, they proudly share the title of European Capital of Culture.

This marks the first time the Giro has entered Slovenia since 2021, when the riders followed a similar cross-border route. That year saw massive support from local fans—something expected again in 2025, especially given the country’s growing love for cycling.

Slovenia has become a cycling powerhouse in recent years, thanks to the international success of Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar. While Pogačar will not be racing in the Giro this year as he is focusing on his fourth Tour de France title and debut at the Vuelta a España, Slovenian hopes remain high.

Primož Roglič, the 2023 Giro d'Italia winner, is back at the start line, now riding for Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe. He’ll be joined by fellow Slovenian teammates Jan Tratnik and Matevž Govekar (Bahrain Victorious), promising an exciting home-soil appearance.

Slovenia’s growing enthusiasm for cycling, combined with the cultural buzz of the European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica–Gorizia 2025, promises an unforgettable day of sport, passion, and celebration.
