Fabula Festival (1.3. - 22.3. 2024) is the highest-profile literary festival in Slovenia and one of the most significant in the wider region. The festival is based on the well-thought-out work of curators, and presents five authors each year.
This year, we will meet authors whose works are literary classics or who have made a significant impact on world literature in recent years. This year's festival will also present promising, up-and-coming authors.
We will have an opportunity to get to know their works: Beautiful Strangers by Mircea Cărtărescu, Napalm in the Heart by Pol Guasch, Deathmaiden by Lucie Faulerová, Children by Milena Markovič, Selected Essays by Maria Stepanova, Border by Kapka Kassabova and Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov and a special guest – Nobel nominee Mircea Cârtârescu.

Raising topical socio-critical issues
In addition to the literary part, the Fabula Festival has a theoretical focus addressing a relevant social issue every year.
This year's festival will take a closer look at the theme of human identity, examining how it shapes our perceptions, experiences and interactions in the contemporary, connected yet diverse world.
Accompanying programme
Every year, the Fabula Festival also features a highly diversified accompanying programme aimed at readers of all ages, ranging from children's and youth programmes (Young Fabula), interactive literary installations in public spaces (Fabula Polis), collaborations with Slovenian publishers and booksellers (Fabula's Selection), to the genre-blending of literature, theatre and other genres (Fabula Outside Literature), thus strengthening the space of the wider literary and social community.
Something new again this year
The new features of this year's festival will be cooperation with the elderly in the framework of Fabula's literary matinees, creative work with students from the art department of Gimnazija Celje, who will be invited to design their own book cover for Fabula pocketbooks, and strengthening cooperation with various Ljubljana and Slovenian cultural institutions, with whom we will organise a series of interactive events.
