Turjak Castle unveils its new look

A castle that shaped much of Slovenian history

Turjak is one of Slovenia's most important castles, renowned for its rich history. It was first mentioned in historical sources as early as the 13th century and, over the centuries, served as the seat of the Auersperg family (the Turjaški), one of the most influential noble families in Central Europe. Its members were military commanders, diplomats, provincial governors and supporters of the Reformation. Among the castle's visitors was also Primož Trubar, while the name Turjak still lives on in stories of Herbard Auersperg, one of the greatest heroes of the battles against Ottoman invaders.

Not just a monument, but a modern cultural centre

Following a comprehensive renovation costing more than €13 million, the castle is no longer merely a precious monument to the past, but also a modern cultural, tourism and educational centre where visitors can experience history in a unique way. Led by the Ministry of Culture and co-funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, the European Union's NextGenerationEU funds and the Climate Fund, the renovation project is one of the largest investments in Slovenia's cultural heritage in recent years.

More than just a renovation

The aim of the renovation was not simply to restore the old walls but also to breathe new life into the castle. The restored northern wing, or palatium (residential palace), takes visitors into the world of the noble Auersperg family, also known in Slovenian as the Turjaški family. The carefully renovated rooms now house communal salons, a library, the count's office, an exhibition area, a café and a breakfast room. Each room reveals a glimpse into the story of the people who, over the centuries, helped shape the history of what is now Slovenia.  The castle's accommodation facilities, with 29 beds in 14 rooms, also offer a special experience.

Turjak Castle is thus establishing itself as an excellent choice for exploration, rather than merely a destination for a day trip. The renovated outbuilding, formerly a hunting lodge, offers an additional 30 beds, intended primarily for participants in cultural, educational and research programmes. With this, the castle is becoming a place for meetings, creativity and the exchange of knowledge. It welcomes school groups, researchers, artists, local and international guests, and anyone wishing to experience Slovenia's cultural heritage in greater depth.

The special charm of the renovated Turjak lies in the diversity of experiences it offers. The cellar of the bastion, or the Ox Tower, houses a wine cellar where visitors can discover local wines, take part in tastings and socialise in a unique castle setting. The upper part of the tower has been converted into a modern multifunctional space for exhibitions, concerts, lectures, business meetings and other cultural events. The castle courtyard and landscaped terraces surrounding the castle also provide the perfect setting for a variety of outdoor events. Turjak is now a place where culture, tourism, gastronomy and social life come together.

The story of the Auersperg family for new generations

At the heart of the renewed castle experience is a new museum exhibition that brings the history of the Auersperg family and its influence on the Slovenian lands closer to visitors from Slovenia and abroad. Particular emphasis is placed on its educational role. Through stories, objects and historical figures, schoolchildren and secondary-school students will discover important chapters of Slovenian history in a way that goes beyond the traditional museum experience.

Culture for everyone

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the story of the renovated Turjak Castle is its accessibility to the wider public. The castle, which is owned by the Republic of Slovenia, is dedicated to providing non-profit museum activities and ensuring access to cultural heritage for all visitors. In line with the principle of "Culture for everyone", admission to the castle is free of charge. It is open for tourist visits from Friday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:00, and guided tours are also available.

A new chapter in the castle's story

Following its extensive renovation, Turjak Castle has once again been restored to its former splendour. The renovated interiors, new visitor experiences and rich history create an exceptional journey that takes visitors from the Middle Ages to the present day. Turjak Castle is no longer merely a monument to the past, but also a tourist destination and a vibrant hub of culture, history and social life.  At the same time, it demonstrates that by taking a responsible approach to our heritage, we can preserve the story of the past and turn it into an opportunity for the future.
